-supporting walls and non-supporting walls
-possible variations in floor levels
-electrical current and switches
-built in cabinets and other fixed elements like chimneys, stairs or bathroom fixtures
-the placement of the doors and windows and the direction in which they open
-the location of the central heating and cooling system if there is any

Framed art by nature is highly decorative. However, do bare in mind that there are certain norms which should be followed:
-it is not appropriate to hang small paintings alone on large expanses of wall spaces
-to put into harmony the overwhelming sensation that a large painting may provoke, a group of paintings should be hung on another wall. You can aslo put some ornamental objects to the side of the large painting, such as a plant , a lamp or sculpture that acts as a counterpoint
-paintings should be hung with just a single nail
-use a dark coloured frame on a light coloured wall to improve the appearance of the painting
-A collection of objects hung in a vertical line will elevate the visual sensation of the ceiling. Hence, base on this reasoning, if a collection is hung horizontally, the room will appear wider
-The coherence of a collection can be created on the basis of sizes, colours, forms or even the themes of each item
-An asymmetrical arrangement of pictures, if well thought out, can give personality and character tot he environment

What is shape and how are they related to interior decorating? Now a shape is any three dimensional object that takes up some of the available space and therefore modifies and defines it.
Hence, to achieve a holistic decorating effect, it is important to be familiar with the different kind of shapes and the ways they can be arranged in order to get the most out of any rooms.
What is the most important consideration for arranging the various shapes? If you guess circulation, BINGO! 
The channels for circulation around the house are always the first consideration when arranging shapes. No piece of furniture should obstruct the passage from one room to another or making moving around the room difficult.
If there is a lack of space in the room, you can use your imagination to make the most out of a difficult space. For example, you can try distributing the room differently, choosing dynamically designed furniture that fulfills its function without taking up too much spaces. If possible, you can try using occasional furniture.

Together with the main focal point of a room, secondary ones should also be taken into consideration when planning the decoration of a room. What are the important factors that must be taken into consideration then?
-an empty space; a window or opening to the exterior, especially if it is a good light source or offers an attractive view
-a hearth, which more than often attracts attention. The surrounding spaces have to be treated in accordance with the level of consistency or contrast we wish to create with the remaining spaces
-A good idea would be to use painting or mirror as a secondary focal point together with the main focus point. You can also choose to use a piece of furniture or an artistic object to override the functionality of the room to give it a better atmosphere for social interaction.
Do take note that when planning a room, the greatest harmony should be sought between the main and secondary focal points. This is crucial to the sucess of your decoration!

Decorating a house certaintly required defining a concept for its interior and making it a reality. Not only does the decoration needs to be of your personal taste, it must also bring about order and practicality to everyday use.
So what determine the character of your decoration?
The answer is sizes, shapes and proportions of the elements of your decoration! The spatial qualities of any living space is inevitably affected by its capacities and functions. For example, the distribution of activities, circulation around the house and ease of movement between rooms with related uses, as well as its ‘look’.

The bedroom is one of the most important area in your house. It can’ t be denied that the manner and surroundings in which one awakes will affect one ’s day.But decorating a bedroom does not mean simply filling it with objects.
It is advisable to lean towards simplicity and comfort of a good bed, a pair of nightstands with reading lamps and a practical closet. If possible, select objects that reflect your personality.You can maxise freedom to play around with contrasting the same elements with different colors on the walls as well as the tapestries.
If you prefer a white bedroom, yoou can try tinting the furniture in white color.The advantage lies in the fact that whenever the paint starts to loose sheen and luster, one can repaint it. It is also possible to purchase a new set of white bedroom sets.
However, the disadvantage lies in the fact that it hard to store them as they can get stained easily.

The importance and advantages of recycling and using colour in decoration has many advantages. With the need to conserve natural resources, people are now more conscious of the need not to waste or squander anything. Hence, recycling has become the order of the day.
Given the high cost of furniture and other decorative objects, it is not possible for us to have a complete change in our interior decoration. Since, we are not ready to replace everything with new ones, it make more sense for us to practise recycling.
Recycling can also add a sense of personal touch and delight. Try to find an alternative use of a piece of furniture by simply paint it in a colour of your choice and finish it with your favourite wood surface. There are many more advantages of recycling and I should give you some tips on how to make full use of old furniture in my future post.

Fengshui and interior decorating often goes hand in hand. This week, Interior Decora is proud to interview one of the leading Fengshui Consultant in Singapore, Master Ken Toh. Master Toh is the principal consultant of Fengshui Forward.
Q: There is a popular saying that the shoe racks or any other forms of clutter, should never be on the right side of the entrance to the door. Is that true?
A: This is one of the most regularly perpetuated myths in Fengshui. Clutter to either side of the entrance to the door is bad and worst if it is smacked in the center of the entrance. This is because Fengshui emphasises on Qi flow. Any form of clutter is bad, be it on the left, right or center as it blocks the Qi flow.
Q: What type of colours do you usually advocate for Fengshui clients to paint their house in?
A: There is no universal colours that are best for every house and every occupants. Generally for Living Room, we prefer brighter colours than bedrooms. That is because Living Rooms are generally a place of activity and we use Yang (bright) colours while bedrooms are place for sleeping and hence we use Yin (dark) colours. I will then use Fengshui formulas to fine tune the colour selection further. Aesthetically, the colour combination has to also be pleasing to the eye and professionals in your line comes in.
Q: Should a house be decorated in a way such that it is always brightly litted?
A: Too dark a house is too Yin from a Fengshui perspective and gives rise to effects like hallucinations. However, Yin and Yang should be balanced so I would not advocate placing more emphasis on brightness.
Q: Which part of the house should I place my fish tank?
A: As a general guide from now till end of year 2023, the southwest sector of your house may be a viable choice for you to consider putting your fish tank. However, there may be exceptions from house to house, for example southwest corner may be the sector of the house that is in the bedroom or it may happen to be a negative sector.
Q: I like a kitchen that is minimalist and contemporary. Do you have an advice for me how to design my kitchen in such way that it follows this theme and yet brings good Fengshui effects?
A:Avoid having the stove in the center of the house even if you do not cook. It should not be situated at a windy area to minimise the risk of fire hazards. Do not place the stove closer than 3 feet to either the refrigerator or the sink.
Q: Is it necessary to erect Chinese symbolic ornaments or paintings to get good Fengshui for my house?
A: A good Fengshui setup can be achieved by mainly using discreet items like mirrors, clocks, pots, plants and wind chimes. However, the discretion is left to the client if they want to use ornaments to enhance it further.
